Blepharoplasty Surgery: What You Need to Know

The eyes are often referred to as the window to the soul, and for very good reason: they’re one of the most important features of the face, so when the skin around them starts to lose its elasticity, tissue begins to sag, aging the face in an unfortunate way. This tissue laxity can also cause bulging fat pads, which present as constant puffy eyes. Eyelid Surgery, also known as a Blepharoplasty, is a minor surgical procedure designed to remove excess, lax skin and bulging fat pads on the upper or lower eyelids.

As the first signs of aging are often noticed in the eye area, the eyelid lift can be used to dramatically improve the appearance while turning back the hands of time. A Blepharoplasty can brighten the eyes, refresh the face, and take away the tired, puffy look by addressing either the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or both.

Am I an Ideal Candidate?

The ideal candidate for a blepharoplasty procedure at our Tampa or Sarasota medical facility will be concerned about the signs of aging around the eye area, in generally good health, and have realistic expectations from the surgical procedure. During your in-person consultation, Dr. Holcomb will review previous surgeries, the position of your eyelids, and any preexisting conditions, before deciding if a blepharoplasty procedure can be recommended.

Patients with excess or redundant upper or lower eyelid skin and/or bulging eyelids may benefit from eyelid surgery. Important considerations include previous surgery, the position of the eyelids, the position of the eye relative to the surrounding bony structures and pre-existing conditions that affect the eyes or may likely affect the eyes.

The Eyelid Lift Procedure

A blepharoplasty procedure at our Tampa or Sarasota facility will usually take between one and two hours to complete, in our accredited surgical center. Since the Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, patients can rest in the comfort of their own home that same afternoon. Eyelid surgery is often performed at the same time as brow lift and/or face and neck lift.

Before & After

Upper Eyelid Surgery

An Upper Eyelid surgery utilizes an incision placed near the natural crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and/or bulging fat.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

  • A lower eyelid surgery may utilize an incision just below the eyelashes. From this incision, excess skin and bulging fat can be removed.
  • The transconjunctival approach is commonly performed, with an incision inside the lower eyelid, for patients primarily dealing with bulging fat.
  • Laser skin resurfacing of the lower eyelids (for example, with the Fractional CO2 Laser) can be used at the time of a transconjunctival Laser treatment, for improved results.

Recovery from an Eyelid Lift

Patients should expect the recovery from and Eyelid Lift to take one to two weeks. Initially, you’ll experience some soreness or tightness around the eye area. Swelling and bruising may also occur, but will resolve on its own within two to four weeks after surgery. After four to 14 days, patients will generally feel well enough and be comfortable with their appearance that they may return to work or school.

Blepharoplasty Cost

On average, the procedure costs anywhere between $4,600 and $6,000, before factoring in the price of anesthesia and other additional expenses that may be incurred. Schedule an appointment with the doctor to discuss the details of your surgery and he will provide a customized plan and quote just for you.
