FDA-approved and in wide use since 2015, Kybella® is the only cosmetic injectable treatment that specifically targets submental fat (excess skin under the chin) and eliminates it. Because a double chin rarely responds to diet and exercise, before Kybella the only way to correct a double chin was to undergo liposuction. The fact that this condition can now be improved non-surgically with convenient injections has made Kybella extremely popular.
A double chin has never been attractive. Fat underneath the chin can add years to your appearance and pounds to your face. It can also be almost impossible to get rid of, even when you’re regularly dieting and exercising.
The root of the problem is often genetic, and therefore affects many individuals. Kybella is made of a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, which is a natural molecule within our body that absorbs fat. Because of this, Kybella has the ability to target and remove double chin fat, revealing a beautifully sculpted neck and jawline area over a series of injections.
Prior to your actual treatment, numbing cream will be applied under your chin to help minimize the discomfort of the Kybella injections. After this, your face and neck will be marked to help guide your specialist. Typically, 10 to 50 injections of Kybella are administered over the course of about 10 minutes. These injections target and destroy fat cells, making it impossible for fat to be stored in that area ever again.
Most patients report that they can feel the pressure of the injections, but no pain because of the numbing agent. Some patients also report a slight burning sensation from the chemical, but this is very tolerable and worth the amazing results. Following treatment, the area will be dressed with a compression garment, and your chin area may feel tender. For optimal results, we recommend 2 to 4 Kybella treatments spaced six weeks apart.
During recovery, you may experience bruising, burning, or numbness. A note on swelling: your chin area will take anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks to subside in the swelling. During this time, you may feel as though your under-chin area looks even bigger, but this is part of the process, and you should not be alarmed. Once the swelling has stopped, you will see your beautifully contoured new neck and profile, and the destroyed fat cells will not return.
The majority of patients see results after 2 to 3 Kybella sessions. During your consultation, we can give you a more specific amount of treatments you’ll need after we examine you, as the number of treatments you’ll need will be determined by how much fat is being removed. Unlike dermal fillers and Botox, with Kybella there is no need for maintenance treatments.
