What Is Chin Augmentation?

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to reshape or enhance the size of the chin. The surgery is often performed to improve the balance and proportions of the lower face.

Am I a Candidate for Chin Augmentation?

If you’re interested in improving the size or shape of your chin, you may be a good candidate for chin augmentation. Ideal candidates should meet these requirements:

  • Be in good physical health
  • Have the desire to reshape or enhance the size of your chin
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Have reached full skeletal maturity
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Be free of jaw disorders or jawbone deformities

How Does Chin Augmentation Work?

Chin augmentation is performed with the use of a chin implant. Based on the patient’s specific goals, our team at HK Plastic Surgery & MedSpa designs a custom implant, which is carefully inserted and molded to the shape of the existing chin bone. This provides the patient with a fuller, more proportionate chin.

Benefits of Chin Augmentation

For anyone unsatisfied with the size and/or shape of their chin, chin augmentation can provide the following benefits:

  • A more prominent and defined chin
  • Improved chin shape and proportions
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Improved profile appearance
  • More balanced facial features

What Should I Expect During the Surgery?

If you’re considering chin augmentation, the first step is to have a consultation with one of our skilled plastic surgeons. When you sit down with Dr. Holcomb or Dr. Kreithen, they will discuss the procedure with you and answer any questions you have. They will help you determine if the surgery is the right choice, and if you decide to move forward, they’ll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan.

The surgery will take place at our private, accredited surgery facility. Typically, chin augmentation is performed using local anesthesia and IV sedation. Your surgeon will begin by making a small, inconspicuous incision beneath the chin. He will then carefully insert your customized chin implant along the lower border of the mandible. Once the implant has been placed, the doctor will close the incision to finish the procedure. On average, chin augmentation surgery takes between one and three hours.

Before & After

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

Typically, you can return home a couple of hours after your chin augmentation. Your doctor will give you detailed instructions for recovery, and you should follow them closely. You’ll likely experience some swelling and bruising, and for the first week, it will be important to get plenty of rest.

Most patients can return to their normal routine after approximately one week. However, you’ll need to refrain from strenuous physical activity for at least two to four weeks.

How Long Will It Take To See Results After Chin Augmentation?

You may notice improvements in your chin immediately after surgery, but the final results will take some time to become visible. Within a few weeks, the swelling and bruising should begin to subside, which will reveal the size and shape of your new chin.
