Patients with a short chin may benefit from placement of a chin implant to augment or lengthen the chin. Important considerations include previous surgery as well as position of the upper jaw (maxilla) and dental arches. Some patients with associated dental problems may need surgery other than a chin implant for maximum benefit.
Placement of a chin implant is a relatively simple procedure that can render dramatic results in balancing facial proportions. It usually involves a small incision under the chin and is commonly performed at the same time as rhinoplasty, neck contouring and/or face and neck lift.
In 2009, Dr. Holcomb authored a scientific paper describing the use of chin implants to enhance facial rejuvenation results with facelift surgery: Holcomb JD. Facelift Adjunctive Techniques: Skin Resurfacing and Volumetric Contouring. Facial Plast Surg Clin N Am. In Press.
