Blepharoplasty Surgery – What You Need to Know

Referred to as the window to the soul, the eyes are one of the most important features of the face.  When the skin around the eyes loses elasticity, tissue will begin to sag, aging the face.  This laxity of tissues can also cause bulging fat pads, which present as constant puffy eyes.  Eyelid Surgery, also known as a Blepharoplasty, is a minor surgical procedure designed to remove excess, lax skin and bulging fat pads on the upper or lower eyelids. As the first signs of aging are often noticed in the eye area, the eyelid lift can be used to dramatically improve the appearance while turning back the hands of time.  A Blepharoplasty can brighten the eyes, refresh the face, and take away the tired, puffy look.

A Blepharoplasty can address either the upper eyelid, the lower eyelid, or combine correction for both.  An Eyelid Lift can be performed alone, or combined with other rejuvenating treatments such as a Brow Lift, Facelift, or Neck Lift.  Combining surgical procedures will decrease the recovery time and discomfort that would be experienced with separate procedures.

The Eyelid Lift Procedure:

A Blepharoplasty will take between one and two hours to complete.  Dr. Holcomb performs blepharoplasty surgery in our accredited office surgical center.  Since the Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure, patients are resting in the comfort of their own home that same afternoon.

Upper Eyelid Surgery:

  • An Upper Eyelid surgery utilizes an incision placed near the natural crease of the eyelid.

Lower Eyelid Surgery:

  • A Lower Eyelid Surgery may utilize an incision just below the eyelashes.  From this incision, excess skin and bulging fat can be removed.
  • The Transconjuctival approach is commonly performed, with an incision inside the lower eyelid, for patients primarily dealing with bulging fat.
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing of the lower eyelids (for example, the Fractional CO2 Laser) at the time of their Transconjuctival Laser, for improved results.

Recovery from an Eyelid Lift:

Patients should expect the recovery from and Eyelid Lift to take one to two weeks.  Initially, patients may experience some soreness or tightness around the eye area.  Swelling and bruising may also occur; this will resolve on its own over the next two to four weeks after surgery.  After four to fourteen days, patients will generally feel well enough and be comfortable with their appearance, so may return to work or school.

The ideal candidate for a Blepharoplasty will be a man or woman, concerned about the signs of aging around the eye area.  If they are generally good health and have realistic expectations from the surgical procedure, a Blepharoplasty can be considered.  At the consultation appointment, Dr. Holcomb will review previous surgeries, the position of the eyelids, and preexisting conditions before deciding if a Blepharoplasty can be recommended.

Dr. J. David Holcomb and Dr. Joshua Kreithen bring more than 25 years of collective experience to each and every patient.  Offering a wide range of surgical and noninvasive cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, we will assist each patient with a unique treatment plan designed to meet their specific goals and needs.  Located in the heart of Sarasota, Florida, our office is convenient for local residents, and the city provides a lovely backdrop for out of town guests.

Patients with excess or redundant upper or lower eyelid skin and/or bulging eyelids may benefit from eyelid surgery. Important considerations include previous surgery, the position of the eyelids, the position of the eye relative to the surrounding bony structures and pre-existing conditions that affect the eyes or may likely affect the eyes.

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) involves the removal of skin and/or bulging fat. Upper blepharoplasty requires an incision that is generally placed near the natural eyelid crease.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty may require an external incision (just below the eyelashes) for removal of excess skin (and bulging fat if needed). The transconjunctival approach (through the inside of the lower eyelid) is commonly performed when the problem is mostly related to bulging fat. Patients often undergo laser skin resurfacing (eg, fractional CO2 laser) of the lower eyelid skin at the same time as transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty for an enhanced result.

Eyelid surgery is often performed at the same time as brow lift and/or face and neck lift.
