For a variety of different reasons, approximately one in four people decide to erase an old tattoo. However, this can be tricky because tattoo ink is very difficult to remove. At Holcomb - Kreithen Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, we are happy to offer the Lutronic PicoPlus® platform, a state-of-the-art laser technology that provides safe, fast, and comfortable treatments to remove that old ink — whether black-and-white or color.
The PicoPlus laser is a Nd:YAG device. It uses dual wavelengths (pico and nano) to shatter pigment within the skin into small particles so that the microscopic particles left behind can be eliminated by the body.
This particular laser combines nanosecond and picosecond wavelengths to make improvements in fewer treatments than single wavelength devices can. The fact that PicoPlus allows use of both picoseconds and nanoseconds also helps to better customize treatment to the patient’s skin type.
Before your treatment begins, a topical anesthesia may be used to make you more comfortable. The length of your treatment will depend on your specific case and needs, but PicoPlus treatments are typically quick and convenient. A handpiece will deliver laser pulses into the dermal tissue, emitting laser energy deep within the tissue to lessen the appearance of pigment.
Because the sensation is very tolerable (most patients describe it as a slight warming of the skin and a subtle prickling feeling), several passes can be made over the area. Immediately after treatment, we may apply a topical or cold compress to calm your skin, but this is not always necessary. We recommend a series of treatments to achieve optimal results.
You may experience some mild redness and swelling after treatment, but most patients are able to return to their regular activities either the same day or the very next day. Results are final and visible once the skin heals after your final treatment session.
