Before & After

About rhinoplasty

Because our nose sits directly in the center of our face, it’s a very important feature that can have an impact on facial balance and symmetry. Rhinoplasty is a highly popular cosmetic surgery because it can greatly improve the appearance of the face and profile, and can truly transform a patient’s self-esteem.

Dr. Holcomb uses the Canfield Vectra® 3D imaging system to help patients visualize their options, and to establish mutual goals for their rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Holcomb is an experienced cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty surgeon with over 20 years of experience.

Why get nose surgery?

Rhinoplasty is designed to improve the aesthetic and functional concerns of the nose. When the nose is balanced with the rest of the face, it can enhance other features and result in a much more harmonious appearance.

Each specific individuals who wants nose surgery has their own reasons. Some have wanted to alter their nose since childhood. Others may have too many problems breathing or snoring, and want to improve their condition.

Some may have undergone rhinoplasty already, and wish to correct unsatisfactory results. Still others may have only begun thinking about rhinoplasty more recently due to their nose being broken or beginning to look different with age.

No matter what your personal reasons for wanting a nose job may be, Dr. Holcomb is an expert in rhinoplasty as well as in surgical management of the nasal airway. With you, he will create a rhinoplasty treatment plan to address your concerns in a safe way that will ensure beautiful results.

Types of nose surgery

Cosmetic rhinoplasty

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is what we most often associate with the term “nose job”. This procedure often involves reducing the size of the nose, narrowing the nose, and/or altering the position of the nasal tip. It is performed for aesthetic reasons. When rhinoplasty is performed for the first time, it is called “primary rhinoplasty”.

Functional rhinoplasty

Functional rhinoplasty is performed to help a patient breathe more easily or reduce snoring. This procedure may involve a variety of maneuvers designed to improve the airway while preserving or improving shape.

Tip rhinoplasty

Tip rhinoplasty addresses only the nasal tip, which often means that the recovery time is shorter than a regular rhinoplasty. In this procedure, the nasal tip is altered to achieve a better projection and balance with the rest of the nose and face. The bone structure of the nose is not affected in tip rhinoplasty.

Revision rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is done to correct a primary rhinoplasty. It is often very challenging because it involves three-dimensional contouring in the face of scar tissue that is present from a first surgery (or multiple surgeries). Revision rhinoplasty may require removing tissue where too much remains, adding tissue grafts or implants where too little volume exists, correcting asymmetry, altering tip position, and/or narrowing the base.

Rhinoplasty surgical details

Rhinoplasty is most often performed under general anesthesia, but is also occasionally performed under IV sedation. It is typically an outpatient procedure and can take between 1 and 3 hours. Dr. Holcomb generally utilizes the “open rhinoplasty” approach, wherein the incisions are made in the columella.

From here, the tissue and skin can be lifted and separated from the underlying structures of the nose so that Dr. Holcomb has better visualization and attention to detail. Although most often open rhinoplasty is chosen, closed rhinoplasty can be performed as well. In closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are made on the inside lining of the nose.

Recovery

Patients should expect the recovery from a rhinoplasty to take 1 to 2 weeks. Bruising is expected, but will resolve over the first two weeks. Swelling is also common, the majority of which will diminish over the first several weeks — although some residual swelling may take up to 12 months to completely subside. A nasal splint will have to be worn by patients for the first week. Patients are able to return to work or school in 10 to 14 days after their rhinoplasty. Strenuous activities should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. Special care must be taken to avoid any accidental trauma to the nose during the initial 6 weeks after surgery (to allow time for solid healing of delicate bony structures). The area above the nasal tip takes the longest to heal, with a gradual decrease in swelling occurring over 3 to 6 months after surgery.
