What is Botox?

Botox is an FDA-approved substance that is designed to be injected into the muscles of the face that are causing wrinkles. Botox is made from a low, safe dose of a purified protein called botulinum toxin. This substance temporarily forces the key muscles to relax, which smoothes away lines and wrinkles and achieves a youthful, smooth appearance.

Patients who are younger and want to avoid wrinkles from appearing in the first place use Botox as a preventative treatment, stopping the muscles from contracting earlier on in the aging process to ward off wrinkles forming. Meanwhile, older patients use Botox to turn back the clock on wrinkles they are already seeing.

Botox Before & After

How does Botox work?

Botox injections target specific muscles that hold wrinkles in place. When you make facial expressions, including laughing, smiling, yawning, frowning, wrinkling your brow in concentration, squinting in the sun, or any other facial motions, the muscles under the skin contract. These muscles are repeated every day, many times a day. As the aging process continues, the muscles begin to stay in the contracted position. This is how wrinkles form.

Botox injections into these muscles force these muscles to relax completely, leaving the skin smooth and free of wrinkles. When it is used as a preventative treatment, the muscles are unable to contract as much earlier in the aging process, causing fewer wrinkles to form at all.

How many units will I need?

The number of units of Botox that are needed depends on your individual aesthetic concerns and goals. On average, 10 to 30 units are typically injected into the forehead. Often, only ten units are needed to address the forehead for the first Botox treatment. However, depending on your age and the tautness of your facial muscles, the number of units needed fluctuates.

Treatment areas

Botox can be used in a range of areas to smooth wrinkles and fine lines, achieving a smooth, attractively youthful appearance. Treatment areas include the following:

  • crows feet
  • glabellar/ frown lines
  • forehead lines
  • bunny lines

  • eyebrows

Recovery and results

After a Botox treatment, the recovery period is quite minimal. Patients can return to their usual activities immediately after treatment–no downtime is required. There may be redness or small red bumps once the treatment is complete, but these usually disappear after about an hour. Wait for a day or two before massaging the area, drinking alcohol, or exercising heavily.

Your results will appear within two days or a week after your first Botox treatment. If you’ve had Botox before, you will see your results within a day of your treatment. Your Botox results will last for 3-4 months.

Before & After Botox in Sarasota

Cost of Botox in Sarasota

Botox is priced by the number of units that are required during your treatment. The cost of Botox varies depending on the amount needed to achieve your aesthetic goals and the number of areas you have treated. Every patient’s facial structure and needs are different, but on average, Botox in Sarasota ranges between $200 to $500.

Botox vs Dysport

Botox and Dysport are similar injectable treatments, both designed to achieve the same results. While it is based on the same substance as Botox (botulinum toxin), Dysport has a slightly different formulation than Botox. Dysport is thinner and spreads more quickly.

Dysport is a good choice for larger areas, such as the forehead, and it allows more range of motion than Botox. Dysport is also a popular option for patients who have built up a resistance to Botox treatments and need an alternative to continue to maintain their smooth, youthful skin.
