Body contouring and body sculpting describe the same goal: reshaping specific areas of the body. Both the FDA and the Cleveland Clinic use the two terms interchangeably. In everyday use, "body sculpting" usually points to nonsurgical, device-based fat reduction. "Body contouring" is the broader term and also covers procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks.

At Holcomb-Kreithen Plastic Surgery & MedSpa, both ends of that spectrum are under one roof. Two board-certified plastic surgeons lead surgical body contouring in Sarasota and Tampa. Dr. Joshua Kreithen has performed more than 10,000 surgeries over 25 years, and Dr. Marc Salzman brings over 30 years of experience. The MedSpa offers one of the area's widest selections of nonsurgical body sculpting technologies.

This blog explains how each term is used, what each approach can and cannot do, and how to tell which one fits your goals.

Are Body Contouring and Body Sculpting the Same Thing?

Body contouring and body sculpting are the same thing in medical terms. The FDA's patient guidance defines body contouring, which it also calls body sculpting, as changing the shape of a body area.

According to the FDA, the term covers several types of change:

  • Reducing the circumference of an area, such as the waist or thighs
  • Reducing small areas of fat to change the body's silhouette
  • Improving the tone and firmness of certain muscles
  • Improving the appearance of cellulite

Cleveland Clinic describes body contouring the same way: a procedure that reshapes an area of the body by removing extra skin, eliminating excess fat, or both. Neither organization draws a clinical line between the two terms.

How Practices Use Each Term

Practices often use "body sculpting" and "body contouring" to signal different levels of treatment, even though the meanings overlap. Body contouring generally serves as the umbrella term for any procedure that reshapes the body, surgical or not. Body sculpting more often describes treatments that use devices to reduce fat or build muscle, without large incisions or general anesthesia.

Holcomb-Kreithen's own treatment menu follows this pattern. The MedSpa Body Sculpting category includes nonsurgical and minimally invasive treatments such as Emsculpt NEO, CoolSculpting Elite, and BodyTite. Surgical procedures such as tummy tucks and body lifts fall under body plastic surgery and are performed by Dr. Kreithen and Dr. Salzman.

Surgical Body Contouring Options

Surgical body contouring removes fat, skin, or both through incisions. That is why it can address concerns devices cannot, such as significant loose skin.

Dr. Kreithen and Dr. Salzman specialize in post-bariatric plastic surgery and perform procedures including:

  • Liposuction, which removes stubborn fat pockets from areas such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and neck
  • Tummy tuck, which removes excess abdominal skin and fat and tightens stretched muscles
  • Lower body lift, which removes loose skin from the abdomen, hips, and lower back while lifting the buttocks and outer thighs
  • Arm lift and thigh lift, which tighten skin and refine the contour of the limbs
  • Mommy makeover, which combines procedures to address changes after pregnancy
  • Body contouring after weight loss, a customized plan for patients with excess skin after major weight loss

Most of these procedures take place in the practice's AAAASF-accredited outpatient surgery center. Surgical results are more noticeable and immediate than nonsurgical options, although recovery can take weeks to months.

Nonsurgical Body Sculpting Technologies

Nonsurgical body sculpting delivers energy through the skin to reduce fat, firm muscle, or tighten tissue without removing any tissue. The FDA groups these devices by the type of energy they use.

Holcomb-Kreithen offers options in several categories:

  • Cold (cryolipolysis): CoolSculpting Elite cools and destroys targeted fat cells, which the body then clears over time. The device treats nine areas of the body.
  • Electromagnetic energy with radiofrequency: Emsculpt NEO combines high-intensity electromagnetic energy and radiofrequency heat to reduce fat and build muscle in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and arms.
  • Radiofrequency with microneedling: Genius Intelligent RF delivers radiofrequency energy through fine needles to improve skin texture and firmness.

Some treatments fall between surgical and nonsurgical. BodyTite, Smartlipo, and Renuvion are minimally invasive and work through small access points rather than across the skin surface. Dr. Kreithen performs Smartlipo-assisted liposuction and Renuvion, which is often paired with liposuction to tighten skin.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), nonsurgical fat reduction is not a replacement for liposuction. These treatments do give patients who are unwilling or unable to have surgery a meaningful alternative.

How Long Do Body Sculpting Results Take to Appear?

Body sculpting results appear gradually, while surgical contouring results show sooner. After cryolipolysis, the FDA explains, the body's immune system usually clears the damaged fat cells within two to three months. The treated bulge shrinks slowly over that period.

Session time and the number of visits also differ:

  • Nonsurgical sessions: About 30 to 60 minutes each, with most people needing several sessions to see results.
  • Surgical procedures: From 45 minutes to several hours, depending on the procedure.
  • Nonsurgical recovery: Most people return to work and normal activities immediately.
  • Surgical recovery: Weeks to months, depending on the scope of the procedure.

Results from nonsurgical treatments may also fade. Many device-based effects are temporary and may need maintenance treatments, so ask your provider how long results typically last for the area you want to treat.

Is Body Contouring a Weight-Loss Procedure?

Body contouring is not a weight-loss procedure. It does not address obesity, does not lead to weight loss, and does not provide the health benefits associated with losing weight. Similarly, surgical contouring is not intended for weight loss; instead, both methods focus on refining and shaping the body.

Body contouring targets specific areas where diet and exercise have not made a difference, or removes extra skin after significant weight loss. Patients at or near their ideal weight also tend to see better-quality results with fewer complications.

Which Approach Fits Your Goals?

The right approach depends on whether your main concern is fat, skin, or muscle, and on how much downtime you can accommodate. These general patterns can help frame your consultation:

  • Significant loose skin, such as after major weight loss or pregnancy, usually calls for surgical contouring like a tummy tuck or body lift, since devices cannot remove skin
  • Small, pinchable fat bulges near your goal weight often respond well to nonsurgical options like CoolSculpting Elite
  • Softer muscle tone in the abdomen or buttocks may improve with Emsculpt NEO
  • Moderate fat with mild laxity may be a good match for minimally invasive options such as Smartlipo, BodyTite, or Renuvion

Every option carries some risk. For nonsurgical devices, the FDA lists pain, redness, swelling, bruising, and nodules as possible complications. Rarer issues include burns and, after fat freezing, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a firm fat bulge that may require surgery to correct. Your consultation is where the team weighs these factors against your health history.
